- BRICK FAQS
- What is a facing brick?
- Facing bricks are brick products typically made from clay or concrete that are used for external facades in construction and are primarily the 'front' of a building.
- Do bricks come in different sizes?
- Yes, there are a wide range of brick sizes available however, the UK standard format is 65 x 215mm whereas Imperial brick sizes are old and they can vary.
- Is there a minimum order quantity?
- We sell our brick products 'per pack' and pack sizes vary due to brick sizes and weight. An average pack of bricks is typically 500.
- Do you charge to send samples?
- No, the majority of samples that we order or deliver we would send with no charge.
- Do you supply mortar?
- We can help you with your lime mortar choices and requirements, we have a range of different colours and types
- Do you keep bricks in stock at the contact address?
- We don't stock bricks here at our office as we don't have a yard but we can deliver to anywhere in the UK. We do have a brick showroom with a vast range of samples to browse, you can book an appointment with our team.
- BRICK BOND FAQS
- What is a brick bond?
- Bonding is the industry term that is given to the brick pattern when laid. Different brick bonds can have a dramatic visual effect on the appearance of a building.
- What is a flemish bond?
- Flemish bond is a brick pattern that is laid and common in Georgian architecture. It features a pattern of a stretcher followed by a header on its side, very popular for its aesthetic appearance.
- Which brick bond is the strongest?
- English Bond - This bond is considered the strongest brick bond out of all the bonding patterns. It is a traditional brick pattern laid with more facing bricks than other bonds. Combines the use of alternate courses of stretchers and headers.
- FLINT FAQS
- What is a flint block?
- It is a pre fabricated block which incorporates flint in the face. Flint is pressed into each block by hand giving each one a unique and traditional effect. They can be laid in a conventional way meaning there is very little waste and quick to lay.
- What are flint blocks made from?
- A concrete block which has knapped or unknapped flint pressed into each block and set individually, giving a unique and traditional effect.
- What are flint blocks used for?
- Flint blocks are used for traditional flint walls and house building enabling builders to conveniently utilise a traditional building method for new homes. The fully formed blocks can be used without a need for a backing wall. They provide a cost effective yet attractive and authentic finish across facades which can be bespoke made.
- What finish is available for my flint block?
- Our flint blocks can be made to order from the choice of finishes; knapped flint, unknapped flint or a bespoke mix of flint. As well as the finish, a choice of flint types can be made from either chalk flint, field flint or cobbles.
- Are flint blocks easy to install
- Yes, they are easy to install and can be laid in a conventional way meaning there is very little waste and quick to lay. Flint blocks can be laid in the same way that clay, stone or concrete blocks can be laid - by using a traditional stretcher or running bond. Our flint blocks are manufactured slightly oversized at 445 x 220mm and are designed to be laid with a 5mm mortar bed. This reduces the visibility of the joints and therefore mimics loose flint providing a seamless look.
- Why would i use flint blocks over loose flint?
- The method for laying loose flint requires highly skilled craftsmen and can be a time consuming and expensive process. These blocks are specifically designed to make installation easier without losing out on the unique aesthetic that loose flint brings to any project.
- STONE FAQS
- What is the difference between reconstituted stone and natural stone?
- The term Natural stone refers to any product that is quarried from the earth and is a naturally occurring material. Reconstituted or Cast stone is a cost effective alternative to natural stone which is produced in moulds using high quality fine course aggregates, designed to replicate natural stone.
- Can you provide stone samples?
- Yes we can, we have a range of different types of stone that feature in different colours and textures ranging from natural walling stone, natural architectural masonry stone to reconstituted walling stone and reconstituted architectural stone.
- What architectural masonry products do you supply?
- We offer an extensive range of architectural masonry products which include ashlar blocks, pier caps, headings and cills, copings and quoins, surrounds and plinths, balustrades and more. We can offer these in both natural and reconstituted stone with full design specification.
- What is cast stone?
- Cast stone (or reconstituted stone) is a form of precast concrete used as architectural masonry designed to simulate natural cut stone. It is more readily available however, its appearance is highly refined.
- PRE FABRICATED ARCHES FAQS
- What is the difference between a lightweight and a structural arch?
- A structural arch is formed on a steel or concrete lintel and therefore does not need any extra support, whereas a lightweight arch is for decorative purposes only and will need to sit on a separate lintel.
- Is there a solution for a brick faced soffit?
- The underside of the arch (the soffit) can be supplied with or without facing brick. The brick soffit is used in situations where the window is recessed and the underside of the arch is revealed – this however, can only be produced as a structural arch.
- Do you collect bricks from site?
- Yes we collect free issue bricks from site to give the ultimate match for your project. The price we provide includes the collection of bricks as well as cutting and delivering the completed product back to site.
- Can you cut and supply loose bricks to form the shape of an arch?
- Our arches can be supplied without being prefabricated to any backing for a traditional built arch. Factory controlled cutting provides the builder with perfectly cut bricks to ensure a quality built arch.
- PRE FABRICATED CHIMNEY FAQS
- Can you design a product to match our drawing?
- Absolutely. As well as our standard chimney range we also have the flexibility to give our clients a size and design that suits specific requirements. Please send us your drawings for a full FOC take-off and costing.
- How are these chimneys installed?
- We provide full fixing instructions along with drawings produced for your approval prior to manufacture. Correct installation technique is critical, therefore we provide you with the necessary support to ensure all queries are resolved. Please contact our team today for details.
- Are you able collect bricks from site to ensure consistency of colour?
- Yes we are able to collect free issue bricks from site, the price we quote will include collection and re-delivery of completed product to site.
- Can they be made to any size?
- GRP chimneys can be made to any size, for any roof position and finished to almost any style. All Brick and Stone offer a full design service, using CAD technology to communicate design solutions to suit your requirements and our experienced team will work with you to provide the required outcome within planning guidelines.
- BRICK TINTING FAQS
- Can any type of bricks be tinted?
- The bricks need to have at least 10% porosity for the tint to penetrate. Harder bricks would need the use of a different product.
- Is there a minimum area requirement for tinting?
- No minimum requirement but there is a minimum call out charge.
- How long does tinting last?
- 30 year guarantee or the lifetime of the bricks/mortar.
- Can i see a sample before going ahead with the tint?
- There is a minimum call out fee for a sample on large jobs of 1000m2 plus buildings but not for small jobs.
